Preparing your plate

Preparing your plate involves the removing of grease/oil and sharp edges from your plate. It also involves cutting of the plate to the desired size.

Carefully measure and mark your plate to be cut. Use your markings to line plate up in plate cutter. Don't always rely on the "square edge of the plate cutter for a true measurement. Cut the plate by applying pressure to the foot pedal without jumping. This allows a smooth even cut. Ask for assistance if your weight is not enough.

Next, file your plate  down as to remove any hard edges that could cut your paper or more importantly your blankets when printing. A smooth rounded bevel works best with attention given to the four corners of the plate. The smooth the edges such that they will not hold any ink you can use your scraper. This allows for clean, white printed plated edges.

Now remove any grease, oil, or fingerprints from the plate. This is especially important if you are going to be applying any grounds to the plate. Polishing compound can be used for a good cleaning or some "green"cleaner with some baby powder can be used followed by a light rubbing with denatured alcohol.
